DEDICATION                                     

 

On Friday May the 14, 2021 after a long and courageous buttle with malignancy,
Vasilios Andrikopoulos passed away.
He was born in Athens in 1945. He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Vienna, of which he was also holding a Ph degree as well as from the University of Athens.
He did his training in general surgery at the “Laiko” Hospital of the University of
Athens, following by training in vascular surgery at the Universities of Pforzheim and Ulm.
After his return to Greece in 1983, he served organizing vascular services at the cancer General Hospital “METAXA”, the trauma General Hospital “KAT” and finally the Greek Red Cross Hospital, in which he served as the Director - Coordinator of the Vascular Clinic from 2004 to 2014.
He was a very active member of the Hellenic Society of Vascular and Endovascular
Surgery, serving as President from 2011 to 2013. In recognition for his services, the
HSVES named him Honorary Member.
He was very active publishing and presenting papers both in Greece and abroad.
He published an exceptionally illustrated book on “Vascular Access Surgery”, the first on the subject in Greek, which was instrumental in advancing the care of renal failure patients by the Greek vascular community.
He was a dedicated teacher, loved by his pupils for his teaching talent and his never- ending interest in promoting their careers.
He was a gifted photographer of people, animals and scenery.
Above all, he was a good friend to all with a rare sense of humor, that was indeed
appreciated in difficult situations and a great family man, extremely proud for the
achievements of his wife and children.
He will be missed by his family and his many friends, but his contributions to vascular surgery will remain to remind everyone of his commitment to this area of medicine.

Giannis (John) Dayantas, general and vascular surgeon, died on February 2, 2021, at age 80. The Hellenic Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery mourns his loss.
He was born in Heraklion in Crete island and was graduated from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian Athens University. He was trained in General and Vascular Surgery at “Laiko” Hospital of the University of Athens and at St Mary’s hospital of London, attached to Ian Kenyon. He completed his PhD thesis on “The use of tissue adhesives in microvascular surgery” in 1974.
After his return to Greece, he worked as senior vascular surgeon at the Athens General Hospital “G. GENNIMATAS”, then as director of the department of General Surgery at the “Venizeleio” General Hospital of Heraklion and ended his career as Director-coordinator of the Vascular department of Athens General Hospital “G. GENNIMATAS”, a position that he has served for more than 20 years.
He was an active member of the Hellenic Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, serving as President from 2007 to 2009.
Giannis Dayantas was a clinically-oriented, talented surgeon, an experienced sailor
and a beloved person. Those of us who have worked with him were attracted not
only by his surgical skills, but also by his personality, which was warm, friendly and caring.
He was survived by his daughter Mary and his son Nikos (Interventional radiologist
in London).
